Can I Use the Wrong Size Diaper in a Pinch?

2 min read

Yes, you can use the wrong size diaper in a pinch for a change or two, and if you have a choice, go one size up rather than down, because a slightly big diaper leaks far less than one that is too tight.

Size up beats size down

A diaper one size too big still holds. Fasten the tabs a little snug and roll the top down if it gapes at the waist. A diaper one size too small is the riskier call, since it cuts into the legs, holds less, and blows out fast. When both are wrong, reach for the bigger one. See what size diaper does my child wear.

Watch the legs and the waist

The two failure points are the leg cuffs and the waist. Run a finger around the leg elastic to pull the ruffles out, which is where leaks start. Check that the waist is not so loose that it slides down. A too-big diaper on a small baby can gap at the legs, so change it sooner than you normally would.

Do not make it the plan

One or two changes is a pinch. Days in the wrong size is a leak problem, a blowout problem, and a waste of diapers. If you keep reaching for the wrong size because the right one is gone, that is a resupply issue, not a sizing one. See what do I do if I run out of diapers and can't get to a store.

When your baby is between sizes

If your baby sits right on the line between two sizes, size up. It is more comfortable, it leaks less overnight, and babies grow into it within weeks. The signs it is time: red marks at the legs or waist, frequent blowouts, or tabs pulling to the last notch.
