The Diaper Bag Checklist: What to Actually Pack
A diaper bag needs to cover one normal outing plus one disaster. That means diapers, wipes, a full change of clothes, and a few things you will be glad you had. Here is the list.
The core
- Diapers: one per hour you will be out, plus two spares
- Wipes, a travel changing pad, and a tube of rash cream
- The right size, and one size up if your baby is between sizes
- Sealable bags for messes and blowout clothes
The clothes
- One to two full outfits. Blowouts do not check your schedule.
- A spare shirt for you. You are in the splash zone.
The extras that save the day
- Small hand sanitizer and a few extra wipes stashed separately
- A bottle, formula, or a snack if your outing runs long
- A spare pacifier and a light blanket for shade, warmth, or a quick clean surface
The restock rule
- Refill the bag the second you get home or the night before. The empty bag is the one you grab on the worst morning.
A sizing and moving note
- During a growth spurt, pack the next size up so a leak does not strand you. During a PCS move, the same logic scales to the whole trip.
