How Do I Get Diapers During a Government Shutdown or a Pay Gap?
3 min read
If a shutdown or a delayed paycheck puts your diaper budget at risk, you have real options, and you do not have to wait it out alone. The fastest help comes from your branch's emergency relief society, and free diapers come from diaper banks and base pantries. Here is exactly where to turn.
Your branch's relief society first
Every branch has a nonprofit aid society that gives interest-free loans and grants for essentials like food, rent, and diapers during a pay disruption: Army Emergency Relief, the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, the Air Force Aid Society (which covers the Space Force), Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, and the National Guard Relief Foundation. During the fall 2025 shutdown, Army Emergency Relief offered zero-interest loans up to a full net paycheck. Bring your LES and proof of the need. These are DoD-sanctioned and safe.
Free diapers from banks and pantries
For diapers specifically, the National Diaper Bank Network connects more than 240 community diaper banks that give diapers away free. Find one through their member directory or by dialing 211. On base, the Armed Services YMCA and family pantries stock diapers, and they tend to ramp up during a shutdown. Operation Homefront and community food pantries help too.
What stays open
Commissaries and exchanges generally stay open during a shutdown, so you can still shop, and the commissary is usually the cheapest place for diapers. During pay gaps, some banks and credit unions like Navy Federal and USAA offer interest-free relief loans, and the exchange has at times let STAR card holders defer grocery payments. Check what is being offered at the time.
Plan ahead if you can
If a shutdown is looming, stock up on the diaper sizes you need now, prioritize essentials over non-essentials, and line up your resources before the gap hits. A little preparation beats a scramble. And watch for scams: use official relief societies and known nonprofits, never a stranger promising instant money.
The short version
During a shutdown or pay gap, call your branch's relief society for an interest-free loan, find a diaper bank through the NDBN directory or 211, and check your base pantry and the Armed Services YMCA. Commissaries stay open. Prepare early, and use only official channels.
