Where Can I Buy Diapers on a Military Installation?
2 min read
Two places: the commissary and the exchange. The commissary is your on-base grocery store and carries diapers, wipes, and formula, usually with a bulk section. The exchange is the on-base department store and carries them too, tax-free. Both need a military ID. Here is how each works.
The commissary
The commissary is the military grocery store, run by the Defense Commissary Agency. It stocks diapers in name brands and its own private label, and most stores have a bulk aisle with larger boxes. A few times a year it runs "case lot sales" in the parking lot with warehouse-size packs at low prices. Watch for those if you want to stock up.
The exchange
The exchange is the base department store. Depending on your branch it is the PX or BX (Army, Air Force, and Space Force through AAFES), the NEX (Navy), the MCX (Marines), or the CGX (Coast Guard). All of them carry diapers and wipes, and everything is tax-free. Any service member can shop any branch's exchange, so use whichever is closest.
A perk worth knowing
Some exchanges give new parents a gift card, often around $10, if you bring a copy of your baby's birth certificate to customer service within about 90 days of the birth. Policies vary by location, so ask at yours.
Who can shop
Both are a benefit of service. You need a valid military ID: active duty, Guard, Reserve, retirees, and eligible family members. If you are Guard or Reserve far from a base, the commissary runs on-site sales and online ordering, and the exchange sells online.
Is it cheaper?
Usually yes, especially at the commissary. We break down the base-vs-store math here.
The short version
Buy diapers at the commissary (grocery, with bulk and case-lot deals) or the exchange (department store, tax-free). Bring your military ID. The commissary is usually the cheaper of the two for diapers.
