How Many Diapers Should I Bring to Daycare or the CDC?

3 min read

Plan on about 6 to 8 diapers for a full day at daycare or the military Child Development Center (CDC), and more for a young infant. Most centers also ask you to keep a labeled supply on hand and refill it when they send a note. Every diaper, wipe, and item has to be labeled with your child's name. Here is how it works.

How many for a full day

A full day of care runs up to 10 hours. At a change every 2 to 3 hours, plus extras for blowouts, that is roughly 6 to 8 diapers. A young infant needs more, closer to 8 to 10. When in doubt, send a couple extra. Running short means a call to you.

Label everything

This is a hard rule at every military CDC, required by regulation. Your child's first and last name goes on the diaper supply, the wipes, and the diaper cream. Many items look alike, and unlabeled items can be turned away. Write the name clearly or use waterproof labels.

What else to pack

Bring wipes, a labeled tube of diaper cream if your child uses it, and at least one full change of clothes (more if potty training). The CDC does not supply these, so it is on you to keep them stocked. Our diaper bag checklist covers the rest.

Keep a stash on hand

Most centers want you to keep a running supply of diapers and wipes in your child's cubby, not a single day's worth. Staff will send a note or a text when the supply runs low so you can restock. Staying ahead of that note is the whole game.

The short version

Bring 6 to 8 diapers for a full day, more for an infant, plus wipes, cream, and a change of clothes. Label everything with your child's name. Keep a stocked supply at the center and refill it the day they tell you it is low.
